We purchased a lovely heritage circa home not long ago. little did we know that the ceiling cavity was full of nearly 80 years of dust and debris and had been home to an extended family of “possums”. Michael and his team did a great job of removing all the dust that is know for respiratory issues. He also sanitised the ceiling space to remove any air born bacteria and the smell the “possums” had left behind. We now have new R5 Bradford Gold batts and a couple of whirlies and eave vents. InsulGuard were very informative and I would definitely recommend!

What is Ceiling Dust?

Ceiling dust is debris that is in your roof space atop of your ceiling. This dust can form from a rang of different sources;

– Airbourne particles. These include emissions from vehicles, burn offs, industrial areas and coal-burning.
– Renovation materials and waste. Everything from broken tiles and timber saw-dust can contribute to ceiling dust.
– Old insulation materials. This is due to old insulation still being in roof as well as loose-fill insulation products. Learn more about insulation removal.

The hazard from ceiling dust is not only from how much dust you have, but the chemicals contained in the dust.

Some of these chemicals include;

– formaldehyde
– lead
– asbestos
– pesticides
– synthetic mineral fibres (SMFs)
– industrial chemicals

These chemicals can all be detrimental on your family’s health.

Health Effects

We are all exposed to inhaling dust every day. At low levels, both urban dust and household dust are harmless. Anyone who is exposed to high levels of dust for long periods of time is at risk. The average Australian spends half their life in the household home. With such a large period of time in the home, ceiling dust removal should be regularly completed.

Ceiling dust has a variety of health effects on your family. For those that have existing respiratory and heart conditions, there is a greater risk. This risk is also higher for babies, children and the elderly when exposed to high levels of dust.

For those that suffer from allergens, asthma and hay fever, symptoms can be ten-fold. We recommend looking at insulation designed for allergen sufferers.
